December 23, 2022President Biden and First Lady Biden Visit Children's National HospitalToday, the President and First Lady visited Children's National hospital where they visited patients and hosted a book reading of "The Snowy Day." First Ladies traditionally visit the hospital around the Christmas holiday, dating back to first lady Bess Truman. Last year, President Biden made the trip, marking the first time a sitting President made a holiday visit to Children’s National Hospital. President Biden encouraged all the parents to continue being strong and assured them that things would be okay.

This week we learned that the American economy is growing, incomes are up, inflation is down, unemployment is at a historic low, and gas prices are near a 6 month low. Uplift Tweet HerePresident Biden's Christmas AddressOn Thursday, December 22nd, President Biden addressed the nation focusing on what unites us as Americans, his optimism for the year ahead, and wishing Americans peace, joy, and health in the coming year.

During his remarks, President Biden called on Americans  to take a few moments of "quiet reflection, find that stillness in the heart of Christmas, that’s at the heart of Christmas, and look, really look at each other not as Democrats or Republicans, not as members of Team Red or Team Blue, but as who we really are." President Biden said his hope is "this holiday season will drain the poison that has infected our politics and set us against one another" and mark "a fresh start for our nation, because there's so much more that unites us than divides us."

 On Wednesday, December 21st, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a visit to Washington, DC where he met with President Biden and also addressed Congress. President Zelenskyy voice great gratitude to President Biden and all Americans who have stood behind him and his country during this war.

During Zelenskyy's visit President Biden announced a new $1.8 billion military aid package, and Congress planned to vote this week on a new spending package that includes about $45 billion in additional emergency assistance to Ukraine. President Biden also committed to ensuring that the  Ukrainian people can continue  defending their country against Russian aggression.

In his remarks to Congress, President Zelenskyy predicted that next year would be a “turning point” in the conflict, “when Ukrainian courage and American resolve must guarantee the future of our common freedom."

 Biden-⁠Harris Administration Announces Historic Investment to Electrify U.S. Postal Service FleetOn Tuesday, December 20th, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced an historic, $9.6 billion investment over the next five years to electrify its delivery fleet. The USPS investment includes electrifying 75% of its new purpose-built Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) and a commitment to acquire 100% electric NGDVs starting in 2026. This $9.6 billion investment – which includes $3 billion in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act – installs modern charging infrastructure at hundreds of USPS facilities, electrifies 66,000 delivery vehicles, and modernizes mail delivery by creating a smarter network to more efficiently reach its 163 million delivery locations across the country and further strengthen the sustainability of this critical public service.

President Bide Hosts Hanukkah Reception

On Monday, December 19th, the President and First Lady hosted a Hanukkah reception where they marked a new tradition, the first ever lighting of a permanent White House menorah. Joined by Jewish leaders from around the country the President spoke about the story of Hanukkah and about the importance of fighting against antisemitism. He made a clear commitment to continue speaking out and fighting against antisemitism.

Watch The President's Remarks Here President Biden Meets with President Guillermo Lasso of EcuadorOn Monday, December 19th, President Biden met with President Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador at the White House to discuss deepening the economic and security partnership between the United States and Ecuador. 

As a part of the visit, President Biden announced a $13.5 million disbursement from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to support microfinance loans through Ecuador, including women-led and owned businesses, as well as the intent to provide $5 million from USAID in support of President Lasso’s initiative to address child malnutrition in Ecuador. The leaders also agreed to deepen security cooperation focused on helping Ecuador combat gang violence by supporting the government’s efforts to strengthen its justice sector, prison system, and maritime security.

Finally, the leaders welcomed congressional approval of the bipartisan United States-Ecuador Partnership Act of 2022 to expand the United States’ cooperation with Ecuador on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting inclusive economic growth, and supporting environmental conservation, among other issues.

President Biden and Vice President Harris Deliver Remarks at The African Leaders SummitOn Wednesday, December 14th, President Biden addressed the heads of state from nearly 50 African nations announcing that the United States is "all in on Africa's future."  President Biden unveiled new free trade opportunities and also spoke to the new investments the United States will be making in Africa. President Biden announced that the U.S. will invest $350 million to facilitate Africa’s participation in the digital economy and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation will invest nearly $370 million for new projects. President Biden made it clear, “When Africa succeeds, the United States succeeds. Quite frankly, the whole world succeeds as well... African success and prosperity is essential for a better future for all of us, not just for Africa.”

On Tuesday, December 13th, during the summit Vice President Harris announced the creation of the President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States (PAC-ADE). PAC-ADE aims to advance equity and opportunity for the African Diaspora in the United States and strengthen cultural, social, political, and economic ties between African communities, the global African Diaspora, and the United States.

Uplift Tweet Here President Biden Signs the Respect for Marriage ActOn Tuesday, December 13th, surrounded by a  group of bipartisan lawmakers, as well as advocates, LGBTQI+ families, faith leaders, and plaintiffs in marriage equality cases across the country, President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act to protect marriage for same-sex and interracial couples.

In May 2012, then-Vice President Biden made history when he said this: “this is all about a simple proposition. Who do you love? Who do you love and will you be loyal to the person you love?” The Respect for Marriage Act helps ensure that proposition is fully realized in the United States. It builds on generations of civil rights advocacy to bring stability and security to millions of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples who will finally be guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled.

During his remarks, the President also acknowledged that the work continues to protect LGBTQI+ individuals across the country, including by passing the Equality Act.
