Super Tuesday Primary States in orange | Democrats Abroad is one of 12 "States" holding a Primary or Caucus on Super Tuesday, March 3, 2020. DemsAbroad has just launched our petitions platform for Democratic presidential candidates who want to add their name to our primary ballot next year. Each candidate needs to collect 300 signatures from Democrats Abroad members by January 6th, 2020 in order to be included on our Global Presidential Primary ballot. So far sixteen candidates have signed up, and we are now sharing the petitions far and wide. Click here for more details on how to sign candidate petitions. |

Have Your Say in the DemsAbroad 2020 Platform
Ken Sherman, Tom Perez, | One of the DemsAbroad Platform Committee's first tasks this year will be to help kick off DA's Kitchen Table Talks, a joint effort of the Global Executive Committee, the Resolutions Committee and the Platform Committee. Kitchen Table Talks are a great way for members to help inform and shape the 2020 Democrats Abroad Platform, and they run from October through December, 2019. |
Citizenship Denial to Children of Military Abroad
Julia Bryan, DA Global Chair | The children of some U.S. military members and government employees who are born abroad will no longer automatically be considered citizens of the United States, the Trump administration announced on Aug. 28th. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a policy explaining the agency will not count those children as "residing in the United States" to get automatic citizenship under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Military members and government employees who are citizens stationed abroad with their families can apply for their children's citizenship, according to the policy. The change will take effect Oct. 29, USCIS said, and applications submitted before then will be subject to the automatic policy. Push for ERA: Virginia Voters Could Take it Over the Top
Count them: 4,764 postcards signed and sent by Democrats Abroad to Virginia voters in a push to (finally) ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. With all positions in the Virginia House and Senate up for election on November 5, it’s an opportunity to flip two Republican-held seats. Virginia House chair Kirk Cox, in fact, has made it his business to block passage of the ERA for the past several years. “It would be a pleasure for us to help kick him out,” says Shari Temple, DA Global IT Team chair, who worked with VAratifyERA to spearhead DA’s postcard-writing campaign in September. With 58 Dems Abroad volunteers and teams working around the globe, more than 2,700 cards were posted to Cox’s district, another 2,000-plus sent to Republican Chris Jones’ district. |
The U.S. Remains in the Universal Postal Union
In mid-September DemsAbroad Canada encouraged Americans to contact their Representatives and Senators to voice their concern for the potential of the U.S. to withdraw from the Universal Postal Union. We are pleased that the member countries were able to reach an agreement. We thank every American who contacted their Representatives and Senators on this important issue! While the risk of the U.S. withdrawing from the UPU has passed, the work by DemsAbroad to ensure access to the ballot box by Americans living abroad continues. We understand that the Federal Passport Revocation Policy that was enacted as part of the 2015 FAST Act has come into effect. The IRS is providing the State Department with the names of persons with outstanding and unresolved federal tax debts of $52,000 or more. Those being subjected to this provision should have been provided with notice and opportunities to cure under the policy's implementation rules. Chapter Spotlight: Vancouver Brings Them In
Vancouver Chapter members at the Lights for Liberty Rally | Close to 80,000 Americans live in Vancouver, and Susan Brennan, chair for DA’s Vancouver Chapter Chair and Membership Secretary for DA Canada, is determined to reach every one of them. “We Americans do seem to find each other,” she says with a laugh. “I think we’re more assertive, especially Americans who leave the U.S. and live elsewhere. Maybe it’s a pioneering spirit.” The Vancouver chapter got its formal start in 2008 when DA held its global meeting in the city. Early leadership crafted by-laws and a constitution, a structure that now supports almost 3,700 members, the second largest chapter after Toronto. The growth was slow and steady, before a sharp uptick in 2016. “In 2012 we had 30 people vote in our Global Presidential Primary,” says Brennan, adding this was the year she got actively involved. “In 2016, that number jumped to 125.” The 2018 mid-terms brought in 100 people to watch the returns, many of whom have now become members and active volunteers. Volunteer Spotlight: Victoria DA Member Finds His Voice on CallHub
Michael Stevenson | As an audiologist, Michael Stevenson is used to listening to people. Since moving to Victoria from Washington in 2007 and joining DA’s Victoria chapter, he’s had ample opportunity to put his listening skills to use. “I was drawn to phone banking because of the time flexibility in making calls and the efficiency of working from home,” says Stevenson, who is consistently the Canadian top caller for CallHub. “I’ve enjoyed being able to call in the morning, afternoon or evening, depending what works for my schedule.” He admitted feeling uncertain at first about how well the program worked, “but those fears were quickly allayed. Training was provided and resources were available when needed. CallHub provides basic contact information, history of calls and ease in updating contact information or requesting follow-up services.” Click here to read more on Michael’s experience as a CallHub volunteer. |
Congratulations to the Winners of the Raffle to see Michelle Obama + 3 Other Prizes
An Evening with Michelle Obama | Through the generous support of our members, DA Canada was able to operate a call center in 2018 which contacted 20,000 Americans living abroad to assist with registering for their ballot or sending their ballot in. Voting by Americans overseas increased by 300% and delivered the numerical difference of victory in several races! Our goal for 2020 is to double the efforts and we're very grateful to those members who participated in our recent raffle for 2 tickets to see Michelle Obama in Hamilton, ON plus 3 other great prizes. This is a starting point to us achieving our 2020 goals. Congratulations to the following prize winners: Elizabeth Greene - London, ON Michele Marques - Aurora, ON Elaine La Chappelle - Burlington, ON Wendy Burton - Oakville, ON Thank you again to the individuals who generously donated the prizes and to those who generously donated to our Get Out the Vote efforts for 2020! December 2019 Welcome to the Democrats Abroad CanaDA Newsletter! Before 2019 closes we’ve prepared a final update on a sampling of the activities happening globally, nationally, and locally in support of the interests of Americans living overseas by Democrats Abroad. In Canada this work is carried out through the efforts of hundreds of passionate volunteers who donate thousands of hours towards a single effort…getting out the vote of Americans living in Canada. And there's never much of a "down-time". Even now chapters are working to finalize plans by year-end for their Global Presidential Primary Voting Centers March 3-10, 2020, which you'll learn more about in our next newsletter. Top of the read are the “No One is Above the Law” rallies happening this Tuesday across the country on the eve of the impeachment vote. Now is the time to show our support of Congress as they take action to defend the Constitution and we invite you to join us. Our chapter spotlight in this issue explores the challenges Canada’s Capital Region faces in connecting with members over a large geographical area, and we learn what motivates Stephanie Perry’s tireless efforts to get out the vote in our volunteer spotlight. We invite you to take a moment to complete the Diversity Survey to help ensure the delegation to the 2020 Democratic Nominating Convention reflects the global membership of Democrats Abroad. Your voice is important on this issue! You’ll also find resources for locating cross-border tax accountants and estate lawyers in your area, plus the dates for the first 4 Primary Debates in 2020. We hope you find the stories informative and look forward to sharing future updates on the tremendous work being done by Democrats Abroad volunteers. Wishing you the best of the holiday season! Democratically yours, Steve Nardi |
"No One is Above the Law" rallies in support of the
impeachment vote - Tues. Dec. 17th
Join your fellow DemsAbroad members for this historic nationwide mobilization on the eve of Trump's impeachment vote. Events across Canada on Tuesday Dec. 17th will join the nearly 500 rallies planned in the U.S., plus the countless number being held globally, to demonstrate to our U.S. lawmakers that U.S. citizens living in Canada are behind them to defend the Constitution—and that Trump has left them no alternative to uphold their oath of office but to support impeachment and removal. To find out if your chapter is hosting a rally click here to access chapter pages, plus follow DemsAbroad Canada on Facebook and watch your Inbox for email announcements. |

Candidate petitions due by January 6th – 15 Candidates hoping
to appear on the DemsAbroad Primary ballot
. | With the Global Presidential Primary process in full gear, Democrats Abroad continues to offer members the chance to sign petitions for individual candidates. In order to be on the GPP ballot, a candidate requires at least 300 Dems Abroad members to sign his or her petition by January 6, 2020. According to Julia Bryan, Global Chair of Democrats Abroad, “Candidate campaigns are focusing their attention on their ballot access next steps. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Yang have sent in all their paperwork and will be on our ballot.” Other candidates, Bryan reports, are “still working to access our ballot, too: Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Michael Bloomberg, Cory Booker, Julian Castro, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer and Marianne Williamson. Many are still gathering signatures.” Bryan encourages DA members to reach out to the campaigns, “if you’d like more information on where they stand in their signature counts.” As DA members we may sign as many candidate petitions as we wish. By signing, we help ensure that a candidate appears on the Democrats Abroad 2020 Global Presidential Primary ballot. Signing a petition isn’t considered either an endorsement or a vote. We will still be voting for our preferred candidate during DA’s presidential primary, state primary or in the general election next November. We’ve made it easy to sign. Just click on this link and then click on the photo of the candidate petition(s) you’d like to see appear on the DemsAbroad ballot. Keep those signatures coming! |
We Got This! Democrats claim victories in November elections
Not only did Democrats score historic victories in Kentucky and Virginia in country-wide elections on November 5th, but also in legislative, municipal and ballot measures. DemList called it a “growing suburban revolt against Donald Trump,” attributing these wins to “higher-income, more educated and mostly female voters.” Some of the highlights:

Voting our issues - Toronto's Women's Caucus
By Karin Lippert, Co-Chair, Women's Caucus, Toronto Chapter
The issues matter. Getting out the VOTE matters. It all matters because we can’t afford to lose. So much has already been lost, trashed and discredited. The Toronto and Canada Women’s Caucus Groups have an opportunity to have a big impact in 2020. It is also a big job. Sometimes the news and noise from across the border is deafening, but we intend to power on. Our goal is to break some records with the numbers of women registered and voting in the upcoming election. Most important, we are going to vote our issues and those that impact every American. We know from our Women’s Marches, potluck dinners, actions like #WeBelieveWomen in support of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, debate-watch events, and fun nights like the Second City all-women show we attended together in Toronto that we have women voters who care. We have to continue to engage them. Click here to read more about Toronto's Women's Caucus and the issues they're fighting for. |
Facebook fans - A safe place to converse about politics
. | DemsAbroad members looking for a safe place to discuss candidates and issues, rant, rave, celebrate, and more, can find all this on the Facebook State Group Abroad, according to Lori Hakulinen, administrator for Americans Abroad Facebook Groups. "We also send reminders for overseas voter registration, ballot request and voting deadlines for each state, as well as promote Democrats Abroad events and membership." |

Raising a fist: DA Canada creates a brave new logo
Brooke Scott always wanted the creation of a new logo and slogan for the Global Women’s Caucus to be collaborative. As a member-at-large for DA Canada, member-at-large for DA Toronto and member of Toronto’s Women’s Caucus, Scott knows a lot about working with people’s talents and strengths. “Toronto’s WC is such a good group for sharing everything,” she says. A Toronto member and graphic artist, Sayeh Beheshti donated not one but three logo designs for the group’s consideration. The chosen one is on the left, with the slogan, “Nevertheless, she voted.” Again the effort was collaborative, with 15-20 slogans submitted. Scott hopes the new logo – recently approved and adopted as well by DA’s Global Women’s Caucus – will be emblazoned on bags, T-shirts and signs for next May’s global DA meeting in Toronto. “Women have so much to lose with another Trump presidency,” says Scott. “We have to be out front and centre.”.. |
Affirming our diversity
Democrats Abroad Affirmative Action Committee encourages all DA members to take part in a short, anonymous online survey aimed to gain perspective on the current diversity of our global membership. The goal: to ensure that DA’s delegation to the 2020 Democratic National Convention reflects who we are. The hope: that those interested in being a delegate candidate and belonging to a historically-disadvantaged group – African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, Native American, those with disabilities, those identifying as LGBT, as well as youth – will feel encouraged to consider running. Chapter Spotlight: Canada's Capital Region brings in the voters
David Schellenberg, chair for Canada’s Capital Region chapter, and Rachel Eugster, vice-chair, share a passion for finding and registering American voters. | The geography covered by Canada’s Capital Region chapter is best marked by the rivers: the Gatineau, St. Lawrence and the Ottawa. “It’s a huge territory,” explains Rachel Eugster, the chapter’s vice-chair, “reaching all the way east to southwestern Quebec, then stretching west to Kingston. We’re trying to hold debate watches in these different areas.” At the hub, of course, is Ottawa and environs, where nearly 80 percent of the chapter’s 860 members live. It’s a challenge, admits David Schellenberg, chapter chair, to organize over such a large area. “We have endless discussions about how much we need to find and bring in more Americans. They’re out there.” While Eugster was a member of an earlier incarnation of the CCR chapter – organizing events such as inauguration balls after Obama was elected and re-elected – Schellenberg was spurred to join Dems Abroad as Trump’s candidacy was heating up. “I remember sitting on the couch watching TV and realizing he might just win. I knew I had to do something.” Five people, including Lissette Wright, treasury chair for DA Canada, as well as treasurer for DA Global, came together in 2015. “We were all thinking the same thing,” says Schellenberg. Volunteer Spotlight: Toronto DA member Stephanie Perry
Toronto phonebanker Stephanie Perry often brings her dog, Shiloh, to voter registration events. “She’s a showstopper,” says Perry. | Stephanie Perry has one piece of advice for Dems Abroad members lying awake at night stressing about U.S. politics: Get up and make some phone calls. Perry, member-at-large for DA’s Toronto chapter, should know. She was second in phonebanking calls from Canada in the lead-up to the 2018 mid-terms and number one for the Toronto call centre. “When I get up in the middle of the night to phonebank, it gives me hope and resolve. That’s a good use of my time.” Perry, a former tax attorney in the U.S. Treasury Department, who moved to Canada 25 years ago, has been using her time to speak out since she was an eleven-year-old Pennsylvanian protesting the war in Viet Nam. She became active in the women’s movement and served as president of the gay alliance in university, even though “I’m a flaming heterosexual,” she laughs. In Toronto, her five-year term leading the Cabbagetown Tour of Homes raised money for many local charities, including women’s and Canadian newcomers’ literacy initiatives, Casey House (HIV care), art therapy for at-risk children, and a shelter for homeless LGBTQ teens. |
Looking for a cross-border accountant or lawyer?
Recently DemsAbroad Canada presented two sold-out webinars on Estate Planning, which educated members on estate planning as an American living in Canada. Common questions received are for referrals to Cross-border tax accountants and Estate Planning lawyers. While DemsAbroad does not endorse any individual firm/preparer at this link you can search for Tax Preparers in your area. To locate cross-border attorneys in your area use this format for a Google search: Watch your Inbox for emails announcing more webinars in the first quarter. |

Members of the Hamilton/Burlington/Niagara and Toronto DA chapters met with Chris Fahey (second from left) and Bonnie Kane Lockwood (third from right), staff members for Representative Brian Higgins (26th district, NY), to talk about tax implications for Americans abroad. | “The majority of us aren’t making millions or trying to hide our money in secret Swiss bank accounts. We just want to live simple, ordinary lives. The amount of stress that comes along with the U.S. tax system is overwhelming. It is extremely complicated and expensive to navigate. We live with a real burden that Americans living in the U.S. simply don’t understand.” – Michigan voter living in the UK Seven members of the Hamilton/Burlington/Niagara and Toronto chapters drove to Buffalo in late January to meet with the staff of U.S. Congressman Brian Higgins, 26th District of New York. (Close to 200 DA members in Ontario vote in his district.) The subject: taxes, taxes, taxes. At a round table with Bonnie Kane Lockwood, Higgins’ director of special projects, and Chris Fahey, the congressman’s deputy chief of staff for special projects, DA members presented their case. Weighing in via teleconferencing from Australia was Carmelan Polce, chair of DA’s Taxation Task Force. Ken Sherman, past chair of the Hamilton/Burlington chapter and member of the Democratic National Committee, explained that Americans living abroad must file taxes both in the U.S. and in Canada. “There are over 6.5 million Americans like us who are suffering serious personal and financial harm because we are subjected to taxation both in the United States – even if we have no U.S.-sourced income – and in Canada where we live. Most of us are filing zero-dollar tax returns in the U.S.” Click here to read more on DemsAbroad Canada's efforts to support global lobbying on tax rights. |
Global Women's Caucus news
Roaring into the 20's Raising awareness around climate-friendly candidates, policies, lifestyle and the special role women can play will be the over-arching goal for DA’s Global Women’s Caucus in 2020. Join the Women’s Caucus – http://www.democratsabroad.org/wc -- and “help propel a ‘blue-green’ wave of new leaders into power on election day!” says Ann Hesse, chair, Democrats Abroad Global Women’s Caucus. Save the date to save the earth! Trash clean-ups, clothing swap meets, packets of “bee-friendly” wildflower seeds handed out with VoteFromAbroad labels. The Global Women’s Caucus Climate Team is teeming with ideas on how to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22. Whether it’s partnering with climate organizations or sponsoring a Dems Abroad event, there will be many ways to mark this important day. Chapter Spotlight: Edmonton builds community
The Edmonton chapter never holds an event without red, white, and blue balloons. | Since Kimberly Johnson took over as chapter chair of DA’s Edmonton chapter last March, it’s been one surprise after another. First, that students at the city’s post-secondary schools – Edmonton boasts two main universities, plus tech and community colleges – would become the chapter’s base. “We have a fair chunk of international staff and students,” explains Kimberly, who teaches a unique combination of art, science and medical history at the University of Alberta. “We basically do voter registration all year long on campus.” Also surprising, she says, has been “finding out how many Canadian-born kids with American parents we now have as members who didn’t even realize they were able to vote. The worse things get, the more excited people are to discover this!” Realizing after the 2016 election that “there were no sidelines left to sit on any more,” Kimberly stepped up as chapter chair after serving as head of communications. “I’m still running our Instagram account. With only three of us in leadership, we run Edmonton with a skeleton crew.” Even so, the chapter hosts an ambitious roster of events from regular debate watches to postcard-writing sessions to Thanksgiving dinners. “We also do what we call Sanity Sessions,” Kimberly explains. “We had one right after the Kavanaugh nomination.” Held in a campus pub, these are a “big source of relief and comradeship. People just want to talk to somebody, for someone to say, ‘No, this is not normal. We’re all worried.’” Click here to read more about how Edmonton is building community. |
Volunteer Spotlight: Riley takes on the Maritimes
Riley Nielson-Baker, chair of the re-activated Atlantic Provinces chapter, is working to extend DA membership to places like Wolfville, Nova Scotia. | After moving to Halifax from Coral Springs, Florida, six months ago to pursue a master’s degree in public administration, Riley Nielson-Baker emailed Democrats Abroad, asking, “Hey, is there an active chapter here?” When told there wasn’t, Riley answered, “Well, there’s going to be.” Since the new chapter hosted its first debate watch last August, it’s been all systems go. “There was no shortage of pubs to choose from for a debate watch,” laughs Riley. “Halifax boasts the largest number of pubs per capita in North America!” Six months in, DA’s Maritimes chapter now numbers 620 members in all four Atlantic provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland. “We’re all one chapter,” Riley explains, “though most of us are in and around Halifax. We’re working on adding representatives from the other regions.” It’s adding up in terms of participation, too, with high attendance at meetings and new volunteers stepping up in new positions. Riley’s especially encouraged by the “big spike in our chapter’s membership, beginning on New Year’s Day,” and with the response to a panel the chapter held in December at Dalhousie University on political culture under Trump. For sure, there are hurdles, especially getting on the radar of local media, “getting our voice heard.” Personally, there’s the work/life balance challenge since Riley is not only chapter chair during an election year, but also a full-time grad student and a volunteer for both the national and provincial chapters of the NDP in Halifax. “It’s hard to not do everything.” Click here to read more on how Riley's motivation is re-energizing the Atlantic Provinces chapter. |
