Restoring Our Democracy No president in modern history has done more to undermine the rule of law and destroy public trust in our institutions than Donald Trump. No political party has done more to disenfranchise voters and reward wealthy special interests at the expense of the middle class than the Republican Party. With the passage of H.R. 1 in the House, Democrats are following through on our campaign promise to hold Trump accountable and make government work for the people. This bill expands access to the ballot box, raises ethical standards in Washington, and restores integrity to ourfederal government. And that’s exactly why Trump and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell are doing everything they can to prevent it from becoming law. The American people are watching, and they will remember which party is actually fighting for them come Election Day. The Consequences of Trump’s Recklessness This morning, the U.S. Department of Labor released the latest jobs and unemployment numbers, which showed that the U.S. economy added 20,000 jobs in February – far below the 180,000 that economists predicted. This jobs report is yet another example of how Donald Trump’s recklessness hurts our economy. Hiring has slowed significantly since Trump’s disastrous government shutdown, while companies like General Motors have shuttered plants and laid off workers after receiving major tax breaks. This isn’t leadership; it’s chaos. The Republican Party has made it their top priority to reward their wealthy friends at any cost, even when it means hurting America’s middle class and working families. After two years of Trump, the damage to our economy and to future generations is mounting. But Democrats are fighting back. We’re committed to building an economy that works for everyone – an economy with good-paying jobs, decent benefits, health care for all, and the chance to retire with dignity and security. Americans know that the Democratic Party has their backs. We are the party of working people, and we will keep fighting for the brighter future they deserve. Building the Best Team for 2020 I’m thrilled to announce that Muthoni Wambu Kraal will join our team as National Political and Organizing Director, Patrick Stevenson will be promoted to Chief Mobilization Officer, and Brandon Gassaway has come on board as National Press Secretary. Muthoni has spent her career training, recruiting and helping elect candidates up and down the ballot. In addition to her wealth of experience, Muthoni brings a 50-state network with her to the DNC. Patrick has been an integral member of our team, and his leadership helped to revitalize our party’s grassroots fundraising. Brandon has already contributed significantly to our team, and we’re excited to have him on board. Democrats nationwide will benefit from their talents as we continue to strengthen our party and work to elect Democrats in 2019, 2020, and beyond. You can read more about ourrecent hires here. Another Judicial Disaster from Donald Trump This week, Republicans voted to confirm Judge Chad Readler, a Trump nominee who is committed to taking away protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Republicans have shown their true colors: They’ve confirmed a judge who has a long and disturbing record of attacking people’s health care, voting rights, and civil rights. He’ll drag us backwards on every issue – from criminal justice and consumer protection to LGBTQ rights and the treatment of immigrants. Voters will not forget this betrayal next November. They know that Democrats are the only party that has their back and will fight for the health care they deserve. Happy International Women’s Day I'm grateful for all of the women in this photo who work tirelessly to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. Today, I'm celebrating all of the accomplishments of women across the country, and I'm proud to continue standing beside them in the fight for equality. Yours, March 1, 2019 DNC Member: Celebrating Women's History MonthHelp Us Amplify Our Message Celebrating Women’s History Month With a record number of women serving in Congress and the speaker’s gavel back in Nancy Pelosi’s hands, we have plenty to celebrate this Women’s History Month. After the 2016 election, millions of women across the country marched and organized. They ran for office, knocked on doors, made phone calls, and told the Trump administration ‘enough is enough.’ Donald Trump, Republicans in Congress, and their conservative allies have continued to attack women’s rights at every turn. Earlier this month, Justice Brett Kavanaugh launched his war against Roe v. Wade. And just last week, the Trump administration finalized its Title X domestic gag rule, which could have devastating consequences for millions of low-income women and their families who rely on the program for affordable birth control, cancer screenings, and other basic health care services. Despite the constant attacks, Democrats are still fighting to protect reproductive rights because we believe that women have a constitutional right to make their own decisions about their bodies. We’re fighting to elect more women to public office because we believe our leaders should represent the diversity of our people. We’re fighting for equal pay and better wages because we believe that when women succeed, America succeeds. And we’re fighting to make sure that every time we observe Women’s History Month, we’ll be able to celebrate even more victories for justice and equality. #FlashbackFriday On my way to an event with the Colorado Democrats this week, I passed by my old apartment from back in the day. I had to stop and send a photo to my wife of our first place together. We have great memories from those days, and now Democrats have put Colorado in much better hands. But, we have unfinished business for 2020. Fighting for Commonsense Gun Laws Democrats want the same thing that 90 percent of Americans want: Universal background checks on gun sales. This isn’t about partisanship, it’s about commonsense. It’s about listening to the American people, not NRA lobbyists. That’s why I was so proud this week to see Democrats in the House pass the first piece of gun safety legislation in more than two decades. As we remember the tragic loss of Trayvon Martin this week, Democrats will keep fighting every day to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer. A Spotlight on Trump’s Crimes Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and “fixer,” Michael Cohen, testified under oath this week about his boss's crimes. We cannot accept this as normal. Trump’s Disturbing Obsession with Authoritarian Leaders While in office, Donald Trump has repeatedly sided with authoritarian leaders, defending their human rights abuses, and rejecting U.S. intelligence. And he did it again this week in Hanoi. Trump’s praise of these leaders is a disgrace to our democracy and an insult to all who value liberty. Another Trump Disaster at the EPA This week, Senate Republicans confirmed Trump’s new EPA Chief, Andrew Wheeler. Wheeler is a former coal lobbyist who devoted his career to rolling back climate protections and destroying ourenvironment. Putting him in charge of the EPA is like putting an arsonist in charge of the fire department. But this is what we’ve come to expect from Donald Trump and a Republican Party hell-bent on selling out future generations. Trump’s last EPA chief, Scott Pruitt, resigned in disgrace after a series of scandals that exposed his corruption. With Wheeler’s appointment, this administration is continuing to put corporate profits over the safety of our people and our planet. Democrats understand the fact that climate change is a pressing threat to our prosperity and national security. We believe every community has the right to clean air and clean water. And we will keep fighting to protect our environment for future generations. Yours, Tom –––––––––––––––––––––––––––– | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Happy New Year!
The speaker’s gavel is finally back where it belongs.
Nancy Pelosi doesn’t just hold the title of first female speaker of the House, she’s also one of the most effective legislators and leaders in our nation’s history. In the depths of the Great Recession, her leadership helped steer our nation back to economic prosperity. And because of her tenacity, millions of Americans have benefited from the Affordable Care Act and its protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
Under Speaker Ryan, Republicans tried to take affordable health care away from the American people. They handed out massive tax breaks to their wealthy friends while leaving working families behind. And they marched in lockstep with Donald Trump’s regressive agenda that has now resulted in a disastrous government shutdown. In November, voters spoke loud and clear: enough is enough. It’s time to hold this administration accountable for its attacks on working families, civil rights, human rights, and the rule of law. The Democratic Party is back and we’re fighting for the brighter future every American deserves – from affordable health care to an economy that works for all. Under Speaker Pelosi and Democratic leadership in the House, we will restore the guardrails of our democracy and get our country back on track.
It’s Time to End the Trump Shutdown
This shutdown should’ve never happened. Democrats offered multiple proposals to avoid it, but Donald Trump decided to throw a tantrum that would be embarrassing even for a toddler.
And now hundreds of thousands of federal employees have been left without a paycheck, federal agencies have lost their resources, and millions of American families have lost access to critical benefits and services.
House Democrats voted last night to reopen the government. The Senate GOP and President Trump should end their reckless shutdown and pass this bipartisan legislation, which includes measures they’ve already supported. The American people have made their voices clear: They want to fund and reopen the government. The time for games is over.
Medicaid Expansion in Maine
This week, Maine’s new Democratic governor, Janet Mills, signed an executive order directing the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to honor the will of voters and expand Medicaid during her first day in office.
This is the difference between Democratic and Republican leadership. After eight disastrous years of Paul LePage, Maine families finally have a governor who will fight for them. At least 70,000 more Mainers will now have access to affordable care thanks to Governor. Mills and Maine voters. This is exactly the kind of change the American people voted for across the country, and it’s a victory for all those who believe healthcare is a right for everyone, not just a privilege for a wealthy few.
Civil Rights Are Under Attack
This week, it was reported that the Trump administration is considering a far-reaching rollback of anti-discrimination rules. This would be a disgrace to the Justice Department’s mission and our nation’s values. Under President Obama, we actually fought for the civil rights of all Americans. Now Donald Trump wants to take a hatchet to the rules that protect millions of Americans from discrimination in education, housing, employment, and other areas. It is an undeniable fact that systemic racism exists and will persist and grow if we fail to fight it. We cannot allow this administration to turn our federal government into an agent of discrimination, and we must uphold the rule of law and our values of equality and justice for all.
Let’s Get to Work
I hope all of you got to rest and spend some time with your families and friends during the holiday season. We’ve got critical work ahead of us, and we need every one of you. We need your ideas, your energy, and your leadership. We need your passion for helping people and your steadfast commitment to our party’s values of inclusion and opportunity for everyone. Together, we’re unstoppable. Let’s get to work.
Yours,
Tom
