DAILY TALKING POINTS

This Year, the Fate of Our Democracy, Fundamental Rights, and Freedoms Are On the Line

  • As we kick off this election year, the choice before the American people couldn’t be more clear.

  • The choice this November will not simply be between competing philosophies of governing – it will be about protecting our democracy and the very individual freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

  • The threat Donald Trump posed in 2020 to American democracy has only grown more dire since then.

    • At the direction of Donald Trump, the MAGA Republican Party has openly embraced a platform of election denialism, undermining our country’s democratic institutions, and restricting the right to vote.

  • Trump is running a campaign on revenge and retribution. It’s a vision of dividing our country, attacking our values, and eroding our ideals. And it would come at the expense of Americans’ freedoms:

    • Reproductive freedoms: Trump paved the way for ripping away the freedom for millions of Americans to get the reproductive care they need by nominating Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Because of Donald Trump, 1 in 3 women of reproductive age now live under an abortion ban. And now he’s running to ban abortion nationwide.

    • The freedom to live in safe communities: Trump and his extreme MAGA disciples want to jeopardize the freedom to live in a country where political violence is unacceptable; the freedom for our children to learn in schools free of gun violence; and the freedom for every American to be who they are without fear.

    • Bedrock economic freedoms: MAGA Republicans want to return to the failed trickle-down economics that protects the rich on the backs of the middle class – threatening to cut Social Security and Medicare to pay for his handouts to the ultra-wealthy, incentivizing shipping good paying jobs overseas, and gutting affordable health care by repealing the Affordable Care Act.

  • Meanwhile, President Biden and Vice President Harris are offering a different vision. They are determined to build a more fair and more free America:

    • Where the economy is built from the middle out and the bottom up, not the top down.

    • That restores Roe so that once again, women have the freedom to make their own health care decisions.

    • That protects our most vulnerable.

    • Where everyone can live, work, and retire with the dignity owed to every single American

  • Time and time again, voters have rejected the existential threat to freedom and democracy that Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans represent.

  • The American people rejected MAGA extremism and chose President Biden and Democrats’ vision of unity over division and hope over fear in 2020—and they'll do it again this year.

MAGA House Republicans Should Stop Playing Political Games With Our Immigration System

  • After inheriting a broken immigration system from Donald Trump, the Biden-Harris administration has been using all of the tools at its disposal to secure the border and fix our immigration system

    • On Day One, President Biden sent Congress a plan to provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, expand lawful pathways for migration, and invest in smarter, more effective border security.

    • Took new actions to increase border enforcement, accelerated the processing of work authorizations, and provided Temporary Protected Status to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans.

    • Protecting public health and safety by cracking down on trafficking of illicit drugs into the United States across our borders.

  • But as the president has made clear time and time again, our immigration system is broken — and only Congress can fix it.

    • That’s why President Biden not only sent Congress a comprehensive immigration reform plan on Day One, but also repeatedly requested more border resources from Congress.

    • And right now the administration is working to find a bipartisan agreement on border funding and policy.

  • MAGA Republicans are actively trying to make the challenge at the border worse in order to advance their own political agenda.

  • Instead of working with the president on solutions, Speaker Johnson and House Republicans chose to go home in mid-December.

  • And MAGA House Republicans have refused to fund our border security at the levels we need:

    • Speaker Johnson and House Republicans have voted for bills that would allow up to 2,000 fewer Customs and Border agents and officers at the border.

    • Speaker Johnson and House Republicans refused to take up President Biden’s request to hire more law enforcement officials, hire more asylum officers, and fund new technologies that detect fentanyl and other illicit drugs.

  • The American people want real solutions. MAGA House Republicans should stop playing political games and work with the administration to pass meaningful immigration reform to secure the border and provide safe, orderly, and lawful pathways to entry.
