DAILY TALKING POINTS

The January 6 Anniversary Highlights Stakes of 2024 Election

  • Three years ago, for the first time in our history, a president had not just lost an election, he then tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob breached the Capitol.

  • Not even during the Civil War did insurrectionists breach our Capitol. But at the urging of Donald Trump, insurrectionists did in 2020.

  • America watched as more than 2,000 rioters launched a violent attack on the Capitol as our duly elected Congress carried out the sacred ritual of our republic and certified the Electoral College vote.

  • About 140 police officers were assaulted by rioters and five people died as a result of the events on January 6 – including a Capitol Police officer.

  • When Joe Biden ran for president four years ago, he said, “We’re in a battle for the soul of America,” and we still are.

  • The threat Donald Trump posed in 2020 to American democracy has only grown more dire since then. He is running a campaign on revenge and retribution – at the expense of democracy and Americans’ freedoms.

  • In fact, our basic freedoms are under siege from Trump and his MAGA disciples.

    • Reproductive freedoms: Trump paved the way for ripping away the freedom for millions of Americans to get the reproductive care they need by nominating the Supreme Court judges that overturned Roe. Because of Trump, 1 in 3 women of reproductive age now live under an abortion ban. Now, he’s running to ban abortion nationwide.

    • The freedom to live in safe communities: Trump and his extreme MAGA disciples want to end the freedom to live in a country where political violence is unacceptable; the freedom for our children to learn in schools free of gun violence; and the freedom for every American to be who they are without fear.

    • Bedrock economic freedoms: MAGA Republicans want to return to the failed trickle-down economics that protects the rich on the backs of the middle class – threatening to cut Social Security and Medicare to pay for his handouts to the ultra-wealthy, incentivizing shipping good-paying jobs overseas, and gutting affordable health care by repealing the Affordable Care Act.

  • There are deep fears about our freedoms being eroded and our democracy being dismantled, all at the direction of Donald Trump, who remains an existential threat.

  • Whether it’s white supremacists descending on the historic American city of Charlottesville or the assault on our nation’s Capitol on January 6, America is worried about the rise in political violence and is determined to stand against it.

    • 83% of Americans are concerned about political violence, and 85% are concerned about political violence in the United States in the future.

  • Trump attempted to overturn the results of a fair and free election, and is now promising to rule as a dictator and exact retribution on his political enemies if he regains power – all while he and his MAGA supporters encourage and applaud political violence across the country.

  • In 2022, election deniers ran all over the country and were soundly defeated – one of Democrats’ strongest ever stretches of success at the ballot box.

  • As we look toward the 2024 election, democracy and freedom are on the ballot once against as the battle for the soul of the nation continues.

  • Every generation of Americans will face the moment when they have to defend democracy, stand up for our personal freedom, and stand up for the right to vote and our civil rights. This is ours, and it’s more important than ever that we win.

Thanks to Bidenomics, More Jobs Were Created in One Year Than Any Year Under the Previous Administration

  • Bidenomics in action: 2023 was a great year for American workers.

    • 2.7 million jobs created last year—more than any year under the previous administration—for a total of 14.3 million jobs created under President Biden.

    • Unemployment below 4% for 23 months in a row—the longest stretch in over 50 years.

    • More Americans in the workforce than before the pandemic.

    • Annual inflation fell to its lowest level in more than two and a half years and wages and wealth are higher than before the pandemic.

    • Small business boom: A record 15 million applications to start new businesses under President Biden.

  • But President Biden believes that there is more work to do. That’s why he is fighting every day to continue lowering costs for hardworking families:

    • Taking on Big Pharma to lower prescription drug costs and cap insulin at $35 a month.

    • Saving roughly 15 million Americans $800 per year on health insurance.

    • Cracking down on price gouging by banning hidden junk fees and calling on corporations to pass savings on to consumers.

  • It’s a stark contrast with Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans’ record of trickle-down policies that failed Americans by creating new incentives to ship jobs overseas, hurting main-street businesses, and blowing up the deficit.

  • And they still don’t have a plan to lower costs. In fact, Trump and MAGA Republicans are doubling down on an even more extreme MAGAnomics plan that puts the wealthy ahead of the middle class and will harm the American economy:

    • Cuts taxes even further for the wealthy and big corporations.

    • Cuts Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

    • Raises costs for families by gutting investments in the middle class.
