TOP TIDBITS

  1. This morning, our country received another sign of the strength of our historic recovery, and of the transition we’re making as we move to a new phase of steady and stable economic growth.

In May, our economy added 390,000 jobs – coming on top of the over eight million jobs already created on President Biden’s watch. And the unemployment rate stayed near historic lows, following the fastest single-year drop on record.

Importantly, we’re seeing more Americans get back to work, with the labor force participation rate ticking up, continuing the progress we’ve made over the past year and a half. This was the result of the president’s economic agenda focused on growing our economy from the middle out, and it’s been powered by the president’s Rescue Plan, which has spurred a historically fast recovery.

The president knows our economy still faces other challenges – and bringing down prices is his top priority. The administration is continuing to take every action we can to lower prices, and the president has laid out a plan to get that done.

The only plan Republicans in Congress have put forward is a very different plan, one which could raise taxes on the middle class and jeopardize the retirement benefits of seniors. The president knows that’s not the right approach, and he’ll continue fighting to put more money in the pockets of working families.

  2. Last night, President Biden addressed the nation on the recent tragic mass shootings, and the need for Congress to pass commonsense laws to combat the epidemic of gun violence. Listen to his full remarks HERE.

  3. This week, the Wall Street Journal ran an op-ed from President Biden outlining his plan to address inflation and transition our economy to stable, steady growth.

    Please help amplify this op-ed.

FROM THE DNC WAR ROOM

@DNCWarRoom: Across the country, Republican House members are facing backlash for voting against helping boost the supply of baby formula during the shortage.

@DNCWarRoom: While Republicans rushed to attend the NRA convention, President Biden is taking a forceful stand and demanding action in the face of recent gun violence.

@DNCWarRoom: Thanks to President Biden, Americans are getting back to work, manufacturing jobs are returning to America, and our recovery is strong. President Biden’s economic agenda is working.

FROM THE CHAIR'S DESK

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement in response to the May jobs report:

“Today’s job report is further evidence that President Biden’s economic agenda is working. Thanks to the work of President Biden and Democrats — and in spite of Republican inaction and political games — our country continues its strong economic recovery.

“While Republicans continue to push an ultra-MAGA agenda that could raise taxes on millions of American families, end the Medicare and Social Security guarantees, increase health care costs, and do nothing to cap insulin prices, Democrats are working to lower costs for everyday Americans on everything from child care to energy costs and prescription drugs. That’s the choice in November: between Democrats who have presided over historic economic growth and have a plan to further reduce costs, and Republicans who have pitched ideas that would make Americans poorer while continuing to cut taxes for corporations and the ultra-wealthy. The choice is clear.”

BREAKING: The economy added 390,000 new jobs in May and the unemployment rate stayed at just 3.6% –  near the lowest level since 1969. Over 95% of the jobs lost in the crisis are back. @TheDemocrats (Twitter), (Facebook)

Over the last two decades, more school-aged children have died from guns than on-duty police officers and active-duty military *combined.* Think about that. @TheDemocrats (Twitter), (Facebook)

As President @JoeBiden said, we can't wait any longer to act. @TheDemocrats (Twitter), (Facebook)

Vice President @KamalaHarris announced that, after years of exploitation, thousands of former Corinthian Colleges students are receiving justice. @TheDemocrats (Twitter), (Facebook)

We’ve added 545,000 manufacturing jobs since I took office—and more manufacturing jobs were created in 2021 than in any year in nearly 30 years. This is no accident. It is a direct result of my economic plan to grow the economy from the bottom up and middle out. @JoeBiden (Twitter), (Facebook)

TALKING POINTS

  1. President Biden Urges Congress to Pass Commonsense Laws

  • In Uvalde and Buffalo and so many other communities across America, there are too many schools and everyday places that have become battlefields.

  • In each place, there are families that are broken and that will never be the same. The President saw firsthand the havoc that was wrecked on them and their communities by gun violence. They have one message to us all: Do something.

  • Last night, President Biden forcefully called on Congress to finally take action. The president has done more through executive action in his first year than any of his predecessors, but he can’t do it alone. Congress needs to act.

  • According to new CDC data, guns are the number one killer of children in the United States of America—more than car accidents or cancer. Over the last two decades, more school-age children have died from guns than on-duty police officers and active duty military combined.

  • We can’t prevent every tragedy. But here’s what President Biden—and the overwhelming majority of the American people—believe we must do:

    • Ban assault weapons — or at least raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21.

    • Ban high-capacity magazines.

    • Strengthen background checks.

    • Enact safe storage laws and red flag laws.

    • Repeal the immunity that protects gun manufacturers from liability.

    • Address the mental health crisis deepened by the trauma of gun violence.

  • The President supports the bipartisan efforts that include a small group of Republican Senators trying to find a deal. But the fact that the majority of Senate Republicans don’t want any of these proposals to even be debated or come up for a vote is unconscionable.

  • President Biden has been in this fight a long time. He knows how hard it is. But he will never give up. And if Congress fails, he believes the majority of the American people will not give up either.

  1. The Biden-Harris Administration Delivers

Thanks to President Biden, unemployment is near historic lows, the vast majority of Americans are vaccinated, household financial well-being reached an all-time high last year, the number of Americans relying on government unemployment benefits has plummeted, and new business applications are being filed at record rates.

We face global challenges – Putin’s price hike, inflation, and a once-in-a-generation global pandemic. But because of the Biden-Harris administration’s plans, the American people are well positioned to face these challenges. Here is just some of the progress we have seen so far:

ECONOMY

  • President Biden’s economic plan has led to one of the strongest job markets in American history. When President Biden took office, our economy was in crisis and the pandemic was out of control.

  • Since President Biden took office, 8.6 million jobs have been created. This is record setting job creation in the president’s first 15 months in office.

    • Since President Biden took office, the economy has created 580,000 manufacturing jobs–this is a direct result of the president’s plan to grow the economy from the bottom up and middle out.

  • The American economy has recovered faster than other major economies, and is poised to grow faster than China’s this year for the first time since 1976

  • And, the deficit was down $350 billion last year and President Biden is on track to reduce it by $1.7 trillion this year – a record.

  • The president’s top economic priority is addressing inflation, and, unlike Republicans, he has a plan to address inflation.

    • President Biden has a plan to lower costs  – from blunting the impact of Putin’s price hike at the pump and lowering utility bills by investing in clean energy to lowering prescription drug and health care costs; from lowering the cost of child care and long-term care to easing the burden of housing costs by investing in building more affordable homes.

    • The deficit is on track to fall by $1.7 trillion under President Biden this fiscal year. And the president has a plan to reduce the deficit even more – even as we invest in lowering families’ costs – by passing tax reform so that wealthy Americans and large corporations pay their fair share.

COVID-19

  • When President Biden took office, 2 million Americans were vaccinated and schools were shut down. Now, because Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan, over 220 million Americans are fully vaccinated and over 99% of schools are open.

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • President Biden worked across the aisle to secure the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law - a once-in-a-generation investment in our nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness.

  • The law is already creating good-paying jobs, helping fight climate change, advancing environmental justice, boosting domestic manufacturing, strengthening critical links in our supply chains, and ultimately lowering costs for working families.

LEADERSHIP ON THE WORLD STAGE

  • President Biden has rallied the world to stand up to Putin’s aggression and support the people of Ukraine. President Biden has implemented unprecedented sanctions to hold Russia accountable and provided tens of billions in funding to arm Ukraine.

ADDRESSING THE INFANT FORMULA SHORTAGE

  • President Biden has directed his administration to use the full power of the federal government to ramp up production and increase supply of safe infant formula.

  • The Biden administration has taken a number of other important actions to ensure there is enough safe infant formula for families, including:

    • Invoking the Defense Production Act.

    • Entering into a consent agreement between the FDA to reopen Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis facility.

    • Issuing FDA guidance so that major formula manufacturers can safely import formula that is not currently being produced for the U.S. market.

  • Additionally, the president announced two new Operation Fly Formula missions that build on the 1.5 million bottles of formula that have already been transported in the first two Operation Fly Formula flights.

    • Beginning June 9, United Airlines will air ship the equivalent of approximately 3.7 million 8-ounce bottles of Kendamil infant formula. This is the first Operation Fly Formula flight donated by an airline carrier.

    • Also starting June 9, Bubs Australia will transport the equivalent of 4.6 million 8-ounce bottles of formula. This is the first shipment of 27.5 million bottles that Bubs Australia plans to export to the U.S.
