TALKING POINTS
BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION WEEK AHEAD TOP TIDBITS

  1. The DNC today announced the launch of Adelante, a signature outreach program to Latino voters that will build on Democrats’ intensive outreach ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Political veteran and expert strategist Maria Cardona will support Adelante in its outreach and messaging efforts. DNC Latino Coalitions Director Michelle Villegas Tapia is launching and will direct Adelante’s programming across the country, including direct voter contact and community events.

In addition to the launch of Adelante, the DNC is also announcing part of a seven-figure investment in paid media, kicking off with a round of Spanish-language print and radio ads. The ads tout the historic progress made under the leadership of President Joe Biden and congressional Democratic majorities. The ads will run in Texas, Florida, Nevada, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania.

Read more on the announcement HERE.

  2. Today, President Biden delivered remarks on his plan to fight inflation and lower costs for working families, and contrasted his approach with the ultra-MAGA plan to raise taxes on 75 million American families and threaten to sunset programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The United States is in a stronger economic position than any other major advanced economy in the world. At the same time, inflation is too high and is putting a strain on working families. The president’s top economic priority is tackling inflation and reducing costs for American families – so we can sustain this historic economic recovery in a way that benefits all Americans.

President Biden has a plan to tackle inflation – by lowering costs that families face and lowering the federal deficit by asking the large corporations and the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share.

Read the White House fact sheet on today’s remarks HERE.

  3. In an interview this weekend, Mitch McConnell confirmed that a federal abortion ban is “possible” under Republican control. Not only are Republicans hellbent on gutting reproductive rights, extreme Republicans across the country – including in McConnell’s own caucus – want no exceptions for rape and incest, to limit access to birth control and contraceptives, and to even throw doctors in jail.

The DNC released the following statement in response:

“With Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell at the helm, Republicans have waged a war on abortion access. Now, McConnell is making clear that a federal abortion ban could be next on Republicans’ extreme MAGA agenda. And worse – Republicans across the country, including in McConnell’s own caucus, support banning abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest. This is what’s at stake in this election. Republicans continue to prove how dangerous Republican majorities would be, and voters will hold them accountable for their extremism.”

  4. Today, Democratic state parties are holding events for a day of action highlighting what’s at stake this November as Republicans continue pushing their radical, anti-choice agenda. These events come a week after reports of SCOTUS’ draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed a GOP majority could focus on a federal abortion ban. Here’s a look at some events that state parties are holding today:

New Hampshire (virtual): Today, Tuesday, May 10 at 9:30 am ET New Hampshire leaders, including Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington, state Senator Tom Sherman, Executive Director at Equality Health Center Dalia Vidunas, and NHDP Executive Committee Member Stefany Shaheen hosted a virtual press conference discussing the possibility of a Republican plan to ban abortion nationwide if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Georgia (virtual): Today, Tuesday, May 10 at 10:00 am ET Georgia Democrats held a press conference with Congresswoman Nikema Williams, chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, and Vivienne Kerly-de la Cruz, Georgia campaigns director of Planned Parenthood Southeast, slamming Georgia Republicans for their extreme, unpopular, anti-choice agenda.

Florida (virtual): Today, Tuesday, May 10 at 11:00 am ET Democratic leaders from across Florida, including state Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book, state Senator Shevrin Jones, state Rep. Anna Eskamani, Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates Executive Director Laura Goodhue, and Ruth’s List FL CEO Lucy Sedgwick held a virtual press conference to call out Republican attacks on reproductive freedom in Florida after reports indicate the Supreme Court will strike down Roe v. Wade.

Wisconsin (virtual): Today, Tuesday, May 10 at 1:00pm ET/12:00 pm CT Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer and medical professionals will discuss the horrific consequences of overturning Roe v. Wade and the impact of Ron Johnson and his Republican allies’ continued efforts to undermine Wisconsinites’ reproductive health. RSVP to this event HERE

Pennsylvania (in person): Today, Tuesday, May 10 at 1:00 pm ET in Scranton, Mayor Paige Cognetti, Pennsylvania state Representative Bridget Malloy Kosierowski, and other Democratic elected officials and community leaders will hold a press conference on Pennsylvania Republicans’ extreme anti-choice agenda following recent reporting that the Supreme Court of the United States is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Michigan (in person): Today, Tuesday, May 10 at 3:30 pm ET Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, an abortion provider in the Detroit area, and community members will join the Michigan Democratic Party to call out the wildly out of touch, extremist GOP agenda to overturn Roe v. Wade and make clear that Michigan Democrats will fight back. RSVP to this event HERE

FROM THE DNC WAR ROOM

@DNCWarRoom: Republicans REALLY don’t want you to hear about their extreme plans to ban abortion, jail doctors, and ban some forms of contraception.
We’ll be here to remind you about their extreme ultra-MAGA agenda.

@DNCWarRoom: Make no mistake about it - Republicans aren’t just going to stop at banning abortion. They’re taking their MAGA agenda to new extreme, and laying the groundwork for legislation that could criminalize miscarriages and ban many forms of contraception.
 FROM THE CHAIR'S DESK

@harrisonjaime (Twitter): Who gave Republicans the right to make decisions about a woman’s livelihood? Nobody did—and nobody should have that right other than a woman and her doctor. [VIDEO]

@chrismeagher46: Senate GOP plan would hurt working families.
From @PunchbowlNews: "the plan calls for tax increases on poorer Americans. It also calls for all federal laws to sunset after 5 years – that would include large-scale social programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid."

@WhiteHouse: Find out if you are eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program and how you can apply at GetInternet.gov.

@POTUS: More than 30 million Americans live in places where speeds are too slow or where there is no broadband infrastructure at all. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re delivering high-speed internet infrastructure to every part of this country.
TALKING POINTS1. President Biden’s Plan to Tackle Inflation vs. the MAGA Republican to Raise Middle Class Taxes

  • President Biden’s plan lowers everyday costs, lowers the deficits, and asks large corporations and billionaires to pay their fair share.

  • The only plan Senate Republicans have put forward would increase taxes on middle class families and let billionaires and large companies off the hook as they raise prices and reap record profits.

President Biden and Congressional Democrats’ plan:

  • Fight Putin’s price hike at the pump: President Biden led the world to coordinate the largest release of oil reserves in history. He produced more oil domestically in his first year in office than President Trump did in his first year. And, he’s also working on producing more homegrown biofuels in the short term, and reducing our dependence on foreign autocrats like Putin with an American clean energy future.

  • Lower costs that have held back families for decades: President Biden would let Medicare negotiate the price of prescription drugs and cap the price of insulin at $35 a month. He has taken action to lower the cost of health care, internet access, and more, while also proposing additional ways we can lower costs on child care, elder care, housing, and other essentials.

  • Hold huge corporations that have been taking advantage of American consumers accountable: Many huge companies are reporting  record profit margins even as they raise prices by record amounts. We’re seeing this from the meat-packing industry to the shipping industry. President Biden is a capitalist, but believes companies shouldn’t raise prices and generate record profit margins off the backs of the American people, and they should pay their fair share in taxes.

Congressional Republicans’ plan offered by Senator Rick Scott:

  • Raise taxes on half of all Americans, including the working and middle class: The only plan put forward by Senate Republican leadership would raise taxes on half of Americans, from teachers to firefighters and 75 million working families in total. At the same time, they’re not asking big corporations or the super-wealthy to pay a dime more in taxes.

  • Put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block: Senator Scott’s agenda for congressional Republicans would put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block by sunsetting them every five years.

  • Obsess with MAGA social issues over the economy: While President Biden and the American people are focused on creating jobs and fighting global inflation, Republicans in Congress are fighting culture wars.

President Biden and Democrats in Congress have ushered in the fastest economic recovery in history following the catastrophic Republican response to the pandemic, bringing the unemployment rate down from 6.4% to 3.6%, and bringing the number of people on unemployment benefits down to 1.4 million -- the lowest since 1970.

  1. Biden-Harris Administration Brings Low-Cost, High-Speed Internet to Millions of American Families

  • President Biden’s top priority is lowering prices, including internet costs. Yesterday, President Biden and Vice President Harris announced new steps to reduce high-speed internet costs for millions of Americans.

  • The president and vice president created the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to cut the price of high-speed internet $30 per month for millions of families. About 48 million families are eligible for the program—nearly 40% of households.

  • The Biden-Harris administration has secured commitments from 20 internet providers to cut prices and increase speeds for millions of households enrolled in ACP.

    • This administration worked with some of the largest providers – like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast – as well as smaller providers serving specific regions and rural communities.

    • Thanks to the administration’s work, these companies are cutting prices and increasing speeds to make sure ACP-eligible households can access high-speed, high-quality internet plans.

    • As a result, ACP-eligible families can get high-speed internet at no cost when choosing one of these plans.

  • This is the latest step the president is taking to cut costs for families and tackle inflation.

  • Today, President Biden will detail his plan to fight inflation and lower costs for working families, and contrast his approach with the ultra-MAGA plan to raise taxes on 75 million American families and threaten to sunset programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

  1. Republicans’ Extreme Anti War Against Abortion Access

  • Republicans are desperately trying to ignore and distract from their decades long war to take away abortion access.

  • In an interview this weekend, Mitch McConnell confirmed that a federal abortion ban is “possible” under Republican control. Not only are Republicans hellbent on gutting reproductive rights, they’re standing on the side of dangerous policies that put millions of pregnant people at risk. Mitch McConnell came right out and said it - Republican majorities would be interested in banning abortions nationally.

  • While Democrats want to protect the right to an abortion and keep these decisions between a woman and her doctor, Republicans have tirelessly prioritized taking away that right, advocating for a dangerous and harmful agenda.

  • Already MAGA Republican governors and state legislatures have made clear what overturning Roe could look like — throwing doctors in jail and banning abortion with NO exceptions for rape and incest.

  • If Roe is overturned, two dozen states have laws on the books to throw doctors in jail or punish abortion providers.

  • Ending Roe means as many as 26 states could move quickly to ban abortion – including 13 states with “trigger” laws that could immediately go into effect – leaving tens of millions of Americans without control over their own bodies.

  • Republicans’ MAGA agenda is wildly out of touch and unpopular with the American people.

    • By about a 2-1 margin, Americans say Roe v. Wade should be upheld.

    • A Washington Post-ABC poll found that 75% of people say decisions on abortion should be left to the woman and her doctor, including 95% of Democrats, 81% of independents and 53% of Republicans.

    • Gallup polling shows that over 80% of the American public thinks abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances.

  • We are facing a pivotal moment for abortion access in our country and this November, every Republican lawmaker will have to answer for their party’s relentless attacks on Americans’ rights.

  • Voters will make their voices heard and Democrats will fight back with everything we have to elect pro-choice leaders at every level of government.
