TOP TIDBITS

  1. BREAKING: The economy added 428,000 new jobs in April and the unemployment rate stayed at just 3.6% –  near the lowest level in 50 years. Americans are getting back to work at a record pace and President Biden’s economic plan is working.

  2. This week, in response to the Supreme Court draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, DSCC Chair Gary Peters, DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney, DGA Chair Roy Cooper, DLCC Chair Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and DAGA co-chairs Aaron Ford and Kathy Jennings issued a joint statement making clear that the Democratic Party will fight to ensure the right to abortion remains intact. Read that statement HERE

  3. Today, just days after a draft decision outlined the Supreme Court’s plan to strike down Roe v. Wade, Michigan Democrats, community leaders, and health care workers called out Michigan Republicans for their radical agenda of relentless attacks against access to safe abortions. If the Supreme Court issues a final decision striking down Roe, Michigan would immediately revert back to a draconian, near-total ban on abortion.

At every level, Michigan Republicans have waged a full-scale assault against reproductive health care. Speakers highlighted how harmful these attacks are, how out of touch the Michigan GOP’s extreme anti-choice agenda is, how high the stakes are for reproductive health care in 2022, and the importance of reelecting Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and electing Democrats into a majority in our state legislature as our last lines of defense.

FROM THE DNC WAR ROOM

@DNCWarRoom: There’s still work to be done to lower costs, but thanks to @POTUS’s leadership, Americans are getting back to work and over 8 million jobs have been created since he took office.

@DNCWarRoom: .@SenRickScott literally put MAGA Republicans’ agenda in writing. Republican control of government could mean higher taxes for millions of middle- and working class families. [ARTICLE]

@DNCWarRoom: Today’s Republican Party is run by MAGA extremists who want to criminalize ALL abortions, raise taxes on half of Americans, and end the Social Security and Medicare guarantee. [ARTICLE]
 FROM THE CHAIR'S DESK

Yesterday, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison hosted a press call ahead of Mike Pence’s remarks at a fundraiser for an anti-abortion crisis pregnancy center. Pence’s visit came just days after a draft decision revealed conservative Supreme Court justices are set to overturn Roe v. Wade and deal a devastating blow to reproductive rights and Americans’ fundamental freedom to make their own health care decisions. Chair Harrison called out Mike Pence’s extreme, unpopular, and anti-choice agenda, and his long history of attacking women’s health care and reproductive rights that led to this disastrous decision.

Millions of Americans have paid into Social Security and Medicare for their entire lives. The Republican plan that could sunset these programs after 5 years is dangerous—and must be stopped. @TheDemocrats (Twitter), (Facebook)

Last week, these Republicans voted against a bill to make it easier to send security aid to Ukraine. @TheDemocrats (Twitter), (Facebook)

My plan to reduce the deficit would help reduce inflationary pressures and lower everyday costs for families. My plan lets Medicare negotiate the price of prescription drugs. We can cap the price of insulin at $35 instead of the hundreds of dollars for some families. @JoeBiden (Twitter), (Facebook)

TALKING POINTS

1. April Jobs Report

  • Americans are getting back to work in record numbers.

  • Today, we learned that the economy created 428,000 jobs in April – bringing the total number of jobs created since President Biden took office to 8.3 million.

  • That is record setting job creation, and the president’s plans and policies have produced the strongest job creation in modern times.

  • The unemployment rate stands at 3.6%— marking the fastest decline in unemployment to start a president’s term ever recorded.

  • There have only been 3 months in the last 50 years when the unemployment rate in America was lower than it is now.

  • This is a direct result of the American Rescue Plan, our COVID vaccination program, and President Biden’s plan to grow our economy from the bottom up and middle out.

  • When President Biden took office, millions of people were relying on unemployment benefits to feed their families; today, that number is only a little over 1 million – the lowest since 1970.

  • There’s no question that inflation and high prices are a challenge for families across the country, and is a top priority for the Biden administration.

  • Our economy continues to face the challenges of COVID-19, Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and global inflation from a position of strength thanks to our robust jobs market and savings that families have built up over the last year. But there is more work to do.

  • Senator Rick Scott is offering an “ultra MAGA agenda” for congressional Republicans that would raise taxes on 75 million American families and sunset Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

  • If congressional Republicans are serious about tackling inflation and creating more good-paying jobs, they should work with Democrats to lower prices for families across the country by making more in America, strengthening our supply chains, and cutting energy and prescription drug costs.

  1. Talking Points on Republicans’ Extreme Anti War Against Abortion Access

  • Republicans are desperately trying to ignore and distract from their decades long war to take away abortion access.

  • While Democrats want to protect the right to an abortion and keep these decisions between a woman and her doctor, Republicans have tirelessly prioritized taking away that right, advocating for a dangerous and harmful agenda.

  • Already MAGA Republican governors and state legislatures have made clear what overturning Roe would look like — throwing doctors in jail and banning abortion with NO exceptions for rape and incest.

  • If Roe is overturned, two dozen states have laws on the books to throw doctors in jail or punish abortion providers.

  • Ending Roe means as many as 26 states could move quickly to ban abortion – including 13 states with “trigger” laws that could immediately go into effect – leaving tens of millions of Americans without control over their own bodies.

  • Republicans’ MAGA agenda is wildly out of touch and unpopular with the American people.

    • By about a 2-1 margin, Americans say Roe v. Wade should be upheld.

    • AWashington Post-ABC poll found that 75% of people say decisions on abortion should be left to the woman and her doctor, including 95% of Democrats, 81% of independents and 53% of Republicans.

    • Gallup polling shows that over 80% of the American public thinks abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances.

  • We are facing a pivotal moment for abortion access in our country and this November, every Republican will have to answer for their party’s relentless attacks on Americans’ rights.

  • Voters will make their voices heard and Democrats will fight back with everything we have to elect pro-choice leaders at every level of government.
