Guidelines for working with aligned groups
Communication Guidelines
Emails
Do not send emails or create event pages that are solely about events sponsored by other organizations and that are completely separate from DA. Consider instead organizing a DA meet-up to attend the event, and advertise the meet-up, OR…
Consider including a brief note about the separate event in a newsletter. The notice should be brief, part of other communication, and it should clearly define that the event is not run by Democrats Abroad.
Social Media and Promotion:
Social media sharing: Share other groups’ posts but be clear in the share that the event is not run by or sponsored by Democrats Abroad.
It is ok to point people to a public facing website (like the public “No Kings” events calendar)
Other groups’ events should not make up the majority of your event post sharing -ie, 1-2 posts over the course of the next week alerting people to “NO Kings” events organized by others in your city/ country is fine
Data
Never share DA membership lists, individual member contact info, etc, with an external organization or individual. For more information about our privacy policy, please review this page. For more information about the Confidentiality agreement that anyone with access to data has signed, see this page.
Fundraising
Never use DA tools, events, or membership lists to fundraise for another organization. However we can encourage folk in certain situations to contact the charity of their choice to help ease the individual lives and personal pains of our fellow citizens.
Suggested language: If you're as concerned as we are about the hardships that the current administration is visiting on our fellow citizens, we encourage you to contact the charity of your choice to see how you can help by donating your time, your energy or your dollars. DA is of course committed to working tirelessly at the political level to save the Republic and democracy itself.
Partnerships
Partnering with another group means that you create joint events and share branding of the event (for example, Democrats Abroad & California Democratic Party are partnering on a joint event about Prop 50.)
✅ Do Partner With:
Other American abroad organizations.
Left-leaning groups that are not affiliated with a political party or government.
Make sure your partner knows DA is a political party.
❌ Don’t Partner With:
Don’t partner with organizations that rely on being non-partisan for their funding or license unless they explicitly agree it’s ok (ex: 501(c)3 organizations).
Don’t partner with foreign political parties or government organizations
Don’t partner with organizations with missions focused on issues related to a foreign government or foreign affairs (any doubt, ask your Regional Vice Chair [RVC])
